I would like to say a huge thank you to all of my customers who made this year a very successful year for Holden's Landing. As part of our month long holiday special extravaganza, we are having 12 Days of Christmas specials, starting today. Each day, a new special will be stocked ... it could be a FFS item, an HC$ auction, coupons, of deeply discounted items!

On the 1st day of Christmas, Holden's Landing gave to me ... a FFS embroidered deer shirt lottery!

In the same spirit, K&F will also be running our own 12 days of Christmas, starting today. On the 1st day of Christmas, K&F gave to me ... an Earth*School winter bundle auction for HC money!

It's also our DINO-mite stocking today at K&F; here's a sneak peek:

International fair

Today we spent the afternoon at an international fair put on by a local group of homeschool teenagers. We had a blast! The kids got passports when we arrived, and traveled from booth to booth doing activities, tasting foods, playing games. At each booth they had to answer a question in their passport and get it stamped by the teens running the booth.

ASL booth - the kids learned a whole bunch of animals signs and how to play "Go Fish" in sign language. Holden was the winner!

Signing "cow"

Signing "duck"

At the Scotland booth, the kids got to write their names in Gaelic/Tengwar and make a Scottish flag

At the braille booth, the kids tried on blinders, checked out some braillle writing, saw how to write their own names in braille and got braille name tags made for them

This was Holden's favorite - hurling at the Irish booth. He kept going back to try this out again and again. I am going to have to make him his own hurley to take to the soccer fields!

There was a music booth as well, and the kids made tambourines and listened to some Beethoven

I think the Japan booth was Kenna's favorite. She loved trying to play kendama (so did Holden). And we got to see each of our names written out in Japanese. In the pic, McKenna (Me-kenna)'s is written first, on the left, then Holden's, then mine

Lots of treats - no tricks - await you at K&F this afternoon! Halloween is my favorite holiday; I loved dyeing and sewing for this stocking. It's the most wonderful time of the year ...

No, not back to school! We're homeschoolers, that means nothing to us... well aside from the fact that we can stock up on crayons and glue and notebooks for a quarter ;)

But I digress. It's the most wonderful time of the year ... fall! I know, not quite yet, don't rush it, bu fall is my absolute favorite season. Pumpkins, apple picking, Indian corn, pumpkins, squash, falling leaves, pumpkins, farm trips, caramel apples ... did I mention pumpkins?

We are celebrating fall today at K&F - here is a sampling of what you will find in store today at noon

K&F - The White Stocking!

When Shadow (Felt Fusion) suggested "The White Stocking" as a theme for K&F, I was intrigued. I am so used to working with color, between dyeing and brightly colored prints, that I loved the idea of WHITE!

Here is a sampling of the fairy collection I put together for today's stocking - all are M/L Bedbugs, with organic bamboo fleece outers/organic bamboo velour inners.

E-I-E-I-O

Kenna wanted a farm cake for her 9th birthday. She had one for her 2nd birthday ... I think she was feeling a little nostalgic in her old age.

In years past, I used to spend hours and days working on cakes for every holiday and birthday. Seeing as though I barely have time to shower these days, so I don't have the luxury of making these elaborate cakes anymore. I worked until noon on friday and then dedicated the rest of the day to cake making. I had forgotten how much fun it was!

Kenna liked it!

Bliss is ...

Knitting. I actually forgot how much I love to knit. This year, I have knit one pair of shorts. That's it. That's very, very sad. I decided last week that this situation needed to be remedied asap. So I cast on a pair of pants, which I finished up last night. This afternoon at a birthday party, I cast on another pair of pants and got halfway through the body and was just loving life. Tonight I decided to go in another direction and knit ... A SOCK! I have (1) never knit a sock before and (2) never knit anything for myself before. I am making he pattern for the sock up as I go along, so there is no guarantee that I will actually have knit something for myself when I finish this either, but, what the hell, I am having fun :) I also printed out a bunch of patterns for a top for myself; I have been hoarding some Yarn Love yarn for 2 years now to make a cami/tank top for myself and just never got around to it. I am hoping to get around to it before it gets too cold to actually wear it. Wish me luck!

Apparently it really *is* what's for dinner

Beef, that is. For dinner. Coming from a girl who was a vegetarian from 12 years old until pregnant in 2003-4 with my son, that's quite a hefty statement. As is the statement pronounced at dinner by my newly-ridiculously-picky-eats-a-prisoner's-bread-and-water-diet almost 9 year old, that "Beef is stellar, mom!". Hmmmm ... stellar. This child will not eat pasta of any kind, cream cheese, or a host of other things she has always eaten in the past. Bacon-cheese-mushroom-onion stuffed burgers? Yep - she would eat those every night if I let her.

So this posting is a plea ... help out a former vegetarian. What on earth do I coo this child with beef? My beef repetiore is very limited (read, virtually nonexistent). Fish, chicken and especially veggies (yuuuummmmm ... red peppers ...) - got those covered. Beef? Well, not so much.

Post or link to your favorite beef recipes in the comment section here and I will choose a favorite over the weekend (probably Sunday morning, as I know I will be home for a little bit then). The chosen poster will receive any one Earth*School unit of her choice (e-version).

Obsess much?

I think I may quite potentially, possibly, maybe have a problem. I am not sure. I cannot stop collecting embroidery designs. Really. Cannot stop. I have an entree hard drive full of embroidery designs. There is nothing else on that hard drive - just designs, designs and more designs. I can spend hours searching for the perfect design for something.

So here are my newest acquisitions ...

Together Tuesday: Flower painting

Summer is finally here in CT, and the warm weather beckons us outside. The kids have been loving checking out the different types of flowers we find everywhere - today it was yellow lilies (and why are they not daffodils? When do daffodils grow? Why don't lilies grow in April?), yesterday it was the mushrooms that sprung up with all the rain we have had lately (I know, they're not flowers, but the kids are VERY impressed with them still, especially Holden, who has an affinity for mushrooms, most likely because of his obsession with Super Mario Brothers), before we got all the rain it was the dandelions that were EVERYWHERE ... then there are the bleeding heart flowers at my parents' house, the roses ...

Today's Together Tuesday activity revolves around flowers. Go out and pick some flowers together. Bring along a field guide to help in identifying them. Bring them home - separate them into two piles and press one pile between pieces of wax paper in the middle of a heavy book (or between two smaller books). Use the other pile of flowers to make flower prints. spread a thin layer of paint on a dish and dip the flower into the paint. Remove the flower and print it onto paper. Make single prints and frame them. Use a large sheet of paper and print multiple flowers and use markers or paints or crayons to add details to create a field of flowers mural. Print onto tissue paper and use as wrapping paper for a special gift. Fold cardstock to resemble a card and print a single flower on the front and use the card to send a special message to a friend or family member.
